Chapter 19

Nix

The envelope seemed so light for the implications it held. Nix turned it over to see the back side, hoping for something, but he just wasn’t sure what. Nix looked up into Gryph’s eyes and received the encouragement he needed. Having him here made a huge difference. He could face anything with his best friend beside him and the team at his back. Nix nodded and lifted the flap, pulling out the piles of papers and letters. He set them on the table and took a deep breath.

“I don’t know why, but I am nervous. Seriously, what could these papers hold that should make me nervous? We know she isn’t my mother already.”

Nix felt Gryph’s hand on his shoulder as he gave a light squeeze of support. Nix grabbed the first paper on the pile. He handed it off to Gryph to look at. The first bunch of papers were just the receipts for cashing her money. He grabbed the next sheet and sat back to examine it. This was it, this was the agreement that sold him to her basically. It looked like a standard sheet of paper upon first inspection, but then something hit him. He looked at Gryph and Josh. “Do you guys see anything odd about this document?”

Josh moved to stand behind Gryph as he looked it over. Nix watched the puzzlement cross their faces for a few moments.

“That document isn’t a guardianship or custody or any type of contract you would expect to see from a legit adoption place. Not that I have ever seen one, but I can’t imagine that you could legally give a child over to someone with a letter like that. It’s not even notorized or anything. It’s an informal letter. Just says here is a kid and here is what we will pay you. That can’t be legal in any sense of the word.” Nix sat back and thought for a few minutes while Josh and Gryph looked over the document again.

“The letters she sent, what is the address she sent them to?” Gryph asked suddenly

“Um, it's just a PO Box. Why?”

“I don’t know, but something is familiar about this. I can’t place my finger on what it is though. Is there any other documents there from them? Anything with a name of a person or company on them?”

Nix and Josh quickly went through all the papers looking for anything like that.

“Not really, there is this watermark on this one though. It’s only on this one document.” Josh handed the letter to Nix.

Gryph looked up from the letter, “Can I see, please?”

Nix passed the document to Gryph and explained, “The letter and the receipts all have the name The Prometheus Corporation.”

He watched as Gryph studied the paper.

“Why does that name and image seem so familiar to me?” Gryph questioned. “I am sure I have seen this image somewhere. Anyone have a pen? I want to trace the image on the back of one of those sheets so I can see it better.
